Are you harbouring the thought of extending or renovating your home?
Taking the decision to design and then deliver a sizeable change to your home can be a big financial, emotional and time consuming prospect.
Make sure you have done your research before you start on your journey. I have gone through this process with clients many times and have found that there are seven very common mistakes that people make that can prove costly to correct.
We can help you eliminate these at the best time; before you begin!
3 Living with the build - Being close to your new baby
Living in the midst of a major new build or alteration can be one of the most stressful things you can do. It pays to be prepared and organise your surroundings so that you are better able to cope with the building process once it gets underway.
We all know the term 'My House My Castle'. Imagine your castle being taken by invaders (contractors) brandishing weapons (power tools, nail guns etc) alongside battering rams (demolition tools) siege towers (scaffolding) and an assortment of common fighters and archers (electricians, plumbers and other trades) and you will have a fairly accurate idea of what it means to be 'invaded'.
Be realistic about your own ability to cope with the plot being used as an open workshop. You may be perfectly happy to live amongst the noise and the dust and not want to be without it. However you owe a duty of respect to your family and their safety must be paramount during the build.
Just think.... would it really be safe to have a small child crawling around if contractors are cutting, welding or grinding on site? The process can be very stressful for some children, they feel insecure as the thing they understand as reliable and constant (their home) is undergoing change.
Depending on the size and scope of your build it may pay to move out for a while to keep your sanity and create a bit of distance between yourself and your project so that you are both happy to see each other when your home is born!
